Description of prayer Class 2 Notes

Book Name : Description of Prayer.

Author : Shaykh Salih ibn Uthymeen Rahimahuallah.

Dars given by Abu Mu’aadh Taqweem

Introduction continues few more points before getting into fiqh of prayer:

Warning from being wasteful with your prayer/not being on time with your prayer.

It warns on slack behavior in regards to prayer.Shaykh ibn Uthymeen says, ”We have seen that the prayer has a great virtue and there are many great benefits behind prayer due to that it becomes clear and you understand that the absence of the prayer is a great deprivation for a person.” The the one who doesn’t guard his prayers is greatly deprived of virtues and benefits.

The End result /punishment of those who don’t guard their prayers:

1) As in Soorah Maa’oon verse 4 and 5, ”So woe unto those performers of Salat (prayers) (hypocrites),Who delay their Salat (prayer) from their stated fixed times,”

2)As in Soorah An-Nisa verse 142,‘ Verily, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but it is He Who deceives them.  And when they stand up for As-Salat (the prayer), they stand with laziness and to be seen of men, and they do not remember Allah but little.”

3) As in Soorah Mudathir verse 42 and 43, “What has caused you to enter Hell?” They will say: “We were not of those who used to offer their Salat (prayers)”.

4)In Soorah Mursalaat verse 48, ”And when it is said to them: “Bow down yourself (in prayer)!” They bow not down (offer not their prayers) .”

5)There are some narrations in which their is encouragement to pray. The encouragement of children to pray by teaching them on young age and accustom them in very young age.

  • In Hadeeth Abu Dawood (459) and Ahmad (6650) narrated from ‘Amr ibn Shu’ayb from his father that his grandfather said: The Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven years old, and smack them (lightly) if they do not pray when they are 10 years old, and separate them in their beds.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in al-Irwa’ (247).

Shaykh ibn Uthymeen asks, ”Who from amongst you has guarded over this trust which Allaah and His Prophet has placed upon you that we have been given to command them to pray at the age of 7 and then to hit them as encouragement to pray from the age of ten, they must pray. The majority of people are negligent of this.”

Shaykh Salih Al Fawzan says, ”Nowadays kids are ruining on the roads and streets playing all day and the parents don’t care calling at the time of prayer taking them to masjid and kids are playing all day with friends. ”

Shaykh Ibn Uthymeen says, ”However, when it comes to worldly affairs then people are very alert like in trade. They will spend all night and day to expand their wealth. Then they leave that wealth after they die and then it is inherited by those who come after them and they are negligent of their children who are the coolness of eyes of their eyes in this world and hereafter. If those children are righteous then they are coolness of eyes those who bring peace to you.

  • The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “When a person dies, all his deeds come to an end except three: sadaqah jaariyah (ongoing charity, e.g. a waqf or endowment), beneficial knowledge (which he has left behind), or a righteous child who will pray for him.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, no 1376; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth)

4)This is responsibility on parents that if they teach their children and make them guard the prayers in young age which will make them righteous then only their children will do duaa for them after their death but since parents are negligent and don’t pay attention to their child then it is not possible that their children will be raised upon righteousness rather being disobedient.

And so Shaykh ibn Uthymeen says, ”that Aren’t you fearful of this responsibility?Aren’t you not afraid of the end result which will come out of not giving attention to your children that you didn’t give them pious upbringing so then as a consequence they will show you no piety. ”

The Ruling on the one who abandons the prayer.

There are two types or possibilities:

1)The one who doesn’t pray because they don’t believe on the obligation of the prayer and rejects its obligation.

RULING : This is kufr (disbelief) without doubt.

  • Because he is rejecting the Ayaat of the Quraan where it says to establish prayyer and it being obligatory as well as rejects Sunnah.
  • The only exception is only you may highlight is maybe somebody is brand new to Islaam and he doesn’t realize yet that prayer is actually absolute obligation 5 times a day and he is not declared a kafir until he is taught it being obligatory.

2)The one who abandons the prayer is somebody who believes on the obligation of the prayer and accepts it. However, he doesn’t pray out of laziness and he is slack and he doesn’t bother to pray.

RULING : Call him to the prayer and advise him and command him to pray. If he starts praying then Alhamdo-lillah but if he doesn’t and is still lazy then the scholars have differed over this type of person in ruling.

  • Opinion 1 : That he becomes a disbeliever as a consequence of this. And he is killed as a kafir. And dies as a kafir meaning You donot pray his janazah and burry him with graveyard of muslims. Consider how the importance of prayer is and its severity.

Evidence : Soorah Tawbah verse 11, ”But if they repent, perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion. (In this way) We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail for a people who know.”

”But if they repent” meaning from Shirk. Here this ayat has put down 3 conditions for these mushrikeen to become Muslims. But if someone fulfills one condition out of 3 then this person is still not Muslim. These conditions are:

  • 1)If they repent.
  • 2)If they perform Prayer.
  • 3)If they give Zakat.

Then they are your brothers(i.e Muslims) in religion.

According to this verse the scholars say that the person who doesn’t pray even after acknowledging that it is obligation, then this person has failed to fulfill condition to be termed as brother in Islaam. Hence, he is still not Muslim. And dies as kaafir. These type of implementations are by the leaders of the countries and not any individuals not in authority. Because individuals those not in authority if they go and kill then this is way of Khawaarij and tafkheeris.

Shaykhh Ibn Uthymeen gives example : When someone visits you and gives you a book and you read it, then be honorable to that man and give that man generosity and nobility in your home. But this statement now mentions 3 conditions that 1) He must visit you for getting your generosity.  2)He must give you a book.  3) He must allow you to read it. If those 3 occurred then give him the hospitality.

This negation in the verse only comes about when there is clear kufr in this way. You negate from that person this brotherhood in Islaam because he has abandoned the prayer. And abandoning the prayer  in ayah tells you , it negates brotherhhood in Islaam. Sins don’t have the same meaning. If a Muslim commits sins this don’t negates the brotherhood. A person steals, fornicates, drinks alcohol, murdered. These are great crimes and sins do not negate brotherhood in Islaam or take out of Islaam. They are major sins. But, specifically this ayah tells you that abandoning the prayer negates the brotherhood in Islaam.

And Evidence to the issue that Major sins don’t get the person out of Islaam is in the Soorah baqarah verse 178.

”O you who believe! Al-Qisas (the Law of Equality in punishment) is prescribed for you in case of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if the killer is forgiven by the brother (or the relatives, etc.) of the killed against blood money, then adhering to it with fairness and payment of the blood money, to the heir should be made in fairness. This is an alleviation and a mercy from your Lord. So after this whoever transgresses the limits (i.e. kills the killer after taking the blood money), he shall have a painful torment.”

Here it is mentioned, ”But if the killer is forgiven by the brother ”.. here the brother meaning the brother of the deceased person, forgives the murderer then the murderer is not given capital punishment. But, the point of the ayah is that the brother of the deceased is termed as the brother of the murderer. This indicates the murderer is still Muslim even after that evil sin. Hence, Major sins do not get out of Islaam and the khawaarij and other sects they think major sins take a person out of Islaam and khawarrij are being around from the time of Sahabah (1400 years ) and been poisoning the people from that time and declaring Muslims to be disbelievers and shedding blood likes of ISIS today. They will also kill those who come on their way. Some scholars declared them Kaafirs.

The evidence of the Sunnah that proves that the one who neglects the prayer is a kaafir includes the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his neglect of the prayer.” (Narrated by Muslim in Kitaab al-Eemaan from Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)).

Another Narration is Hadeeth of  Buraydah ibn al-Husayb (may Allaah be pleased with him) who said: “I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: ‘The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is the prayer, and whoever neglects it has disbelieved (become a kaafir).’” (It was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah).

Prayer is one of the pillars of Islaam so  if there is no prayer then there is no Islaam.

‘Umar Ibne Khattab Radi Allaaho Anhu said, ”There is no place in Islaam for a person who leaves prayer” (mentioned by Dar-At-Kutni)

And this is strong opinion of Scholars due to these narrations and there are more narrations but this is summary. The scholars say that if you look at the importance of prayer then see hajj is obligatory once a lifetime upon you. The fasting and zakaat is obligation once in the year. Zakat if you have the right amount. But, prayer is 5 times obligatory every single day.

  • Opinion 2 : a person who abandons the prayer and he knows and accepts it is obligatory and you command him and he doesn’t listen then he is killed . The ruler gives him punishment and he dies as a Muslim. And he is buried in Muslim graves and prayer of janazah is prayed on him.

The similarity between first opinion and this, is that He is given punishment. And therefore, this shows the sevreity of the punishment of abandoning the prayer.

The Prophet Sal Allaho Alyhe wasalam said, ”The first thing people will be ACCOUNTABLE for on the Day of Judgment is Prayer. ”(Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and An-Nasa’i)

Shaykh ibn uthymeen says, ”Look at both opinions, even though they differed on the type of death he died (i.e being muslim or kaafir). They all agree that this person is punished under muslim ruler to death. And so there is agreement on this issue.

Shaykh Ibn uthymeen expresses the concern that how sad is the state of Muslims that they take prayer as burden and how easily they abandon it without fearing the accountability. When something worried Prophet Sal Allaaho Alyhe wasalam he would go and stand in prayer and this would relief his worries. Just like Allaah Azza wa jal said in Soorah baqarah, ”Seek aid in patience and Salah”. So, the Shaykh asks which religion are these people upon after abandoning the Salah ?knowing it being obligation. Some people give excused for themselves that I am a Muslim even though i don’t pray. We say these people this is not enough for you with Allaah. Until you submit yourself to Allaah. Because, one of the conditions of La ilaaha illallah is to submit to the rulings of Allaah or obligations. Because, Eemaan is what has been established in your heart and your actions testify to it. Without actions there is no truthfulness in your claim. Hence, we saw from the scholars that leaving the prayer as obligation leads to apostasy and you are not considered Muslim anymore.

And we end dars by narration which says, ”The last thing that you will lose from your religion is the prayer” meaning once you lost the prayer, out of the religion again.

Advise: Tell importance of this prayer to friends, families , relatives and command them to pray 5 times a day. And make sure the severity of this issue is known to them so that they don’t abandon it.
